Maytag

The Maytag Washing Machine Company was founded in 1893 and grew to become a leading manufacturer of washers and dryers in the United States.

During the Great Depression and World War II, Maytag managed to continue making profits and producing appliances. In the postwar era, Maytag expanded into marketing other companies’ appliances under its brand.

By the 1960s, Maytag refocused on its core washers and dryers. Through acquisitions and global expansion in the 1980s and 90s, Maytag sought to compete with larger appliance makers. But, manufacturing and quality issues in the early 2000s damaged Maytag’s reputation. Its market share declined and it faced many customer complaints.

In 2005, a takeover bid from Chinese company Haier failed, and rival Whirlpool purchased Maytag instead. Whirlpool soon closed Maytag headquarters and plants, terminating most employees. The Maytag brand name was kept, but production was shifted to Whirlpool models.
