The pre filter in your Dyson DC49 should be inspected regulary and cleaned on a regular basis, if this filter is blocked it does not let air pass through causing loss of suction, and in extreme cases will make the motor get hot and can cause serious damage to the motor. If you are cleaning the filter its important to leave the filter for the DC49 for at least 24hrs to dry before replacing back in the hoover, or you could allways keep a spare handy to use while the other one dries out.
