Indesit Washing Machine Carbon Brushes: Role, Symptoms, and Error Codes

What Do Carbon Brushes Do?

Carbon brushes are small, spring-loaded blocks that conduct electricity to your Indesit washing machine’s motor. They enable the drum to spin during wash and spin cycles by powering the motor’s rotating armature.

Because they’re constantly in contact with moving parts, carbon brushes wear down over time. If they become too short, they lose contact—and your machine can stop spinning altogether.

Signs Your Carbon Brushes May Be Worn

Look out for these symptoms:

  • Drum fails to turn or spins intermittently
  • Machine fills and drains but doesn’t agitate or spin
  • Sparking or strange noises from the motor
  • Flashing lights or error codes related to motor problems

If your Indesit machine won’t spin or only works occasionally, worn carbon brushes are a likely cause. Replacing them often solves the issue.

Common Error Codes Linked to Worn Brushes

F01 – Motor Triac Short Circuit
This error often points to worn brushes. Replacing them usually resolves it. If not, the fault may lie in the motor wiring or control board.

F02 – Drive Motor Fault
This indicates the motor isn’t turning properly. The most common cause? Worn or faulty carbon brushes. If replacing the brushes doesn’t help, check the tachometer or wiring.

How to Check and Replace Carbon Brushes

  1. Unplug the machine from the mains supply.
  2. Access the motor by removing the back or bottom panel.
  3. Inspect the brushes on either side of the motor. Remove and compare their length with new ones. If they’re much shorter, it’s time to replace them.
  4. Fit the correct brushes for your motor and model. Make sure they slide freely and make solid contact with the armature.
  5. Reassemble the machine and test for smooth drum rotation.

Important Note

Not all Indesit washing machines use carbon brush motors. Some newer models feature brushless (silent) motors, which do not require carbon brushes. Check your machine’s specs before ordering parts.

In Summary

Worn carbon brushes are a common cause of motor and spinning problems in Indesit washing machines. They’re also linked to F01 and F02 error codes. Regular checks and timely replacement can restore full performance—without the cost of a new appliance.
